I had originally described Scappaticci's fish and chip shop in these photos as being on the corner of Henderson Street and Coalhill. However, Fraser Parkinson has written to tell me that it was actually on the corner of Kirkgate and Coatfield Lane. Thank you Fraser. Your comments are helpful. I've now changed the caption for this page. |

Kirkgate and Coatfield Lane "I can now tell you that the correct location of Scappaticci's Restaurant in Leith was NOT Henderson Street and Coalhill but it was on the corner of Kirkgate and Coatfield Lane. I've looked very closely at 1960s Edinburgh photographs of this location and the photograph which you have from the 'Old Leithers' website. World War II Haberdashery Shop "During World War II and after, the premises of Scappaticci's fish and chip shop (below) were occupied by a haberdashery shop." "To the right of the former Scappaticci's fish and chip shop in this picture, there is a doorway that gave access to the premises above the ground floor Shops. More Shops "To the right of the entrance door for the upper floor premises, there is another small shop. At the end of WWII, this was a wallpaper shop. To the right of the wallpaper shop was Laing’s, a double- fronted butcher shop. During the time of rationing, this was the butcher shop thatmy Mother used. All these shops, in the Kirkgate and around the corner from Coatfield Lane, were directly facing St Andrew Street, across the road."
