Formerly there
ware railway yards and sidings on the west side of Lothian Road. In
this photo, taken in 1993, the two storey railway buildings and the
Caledonian Hotel can be seen.
Within a few
years, the low railway buildings had been demolished and a new Head Office
for Standard Life Assurance Company had been built. on the corner of
Lothian Road and the Western Approach Road.

The Western Approach
Road was realigned, further to the north, where it met Lothian Road,
making room for Festival Square, the Sheraton Hotel and new financial
offices to be built on the southern side of the Western Approach road.
