Inscription John also sent me another photo that he took at Newhaven, this one zooming-in to the writing engraved on the wall above the cabinet. It reads: "ERECTED 1775. RE-ERECTED 1900" |

I remember seeing this cabinet on the wall. I first saw it in the 1960s. - Inside the cabinet, there was a barometer. - On the notice board to the right was a list of the times of high tide. - Engraved in the stonework on the pediment is a fishing boat with sail. No 5 is to the left of Newhaven Free Church (now a climbing centre) at Nos.7-8 Pier Place, as we look at the buildings from Newhaven Harbour. The tenement at No.5 Pier Place was built, around 1840, as residential accommodation for The Society of Free Fishermen. Peter Stubbs: November 20, 2011 |
