Question

What is or was in this Cabinet?

"I took this photo of a cabinet on the wall of one of the buildings opposite Newhaven Harbour.

I wonder if any Leither can tell me what is or was in there."

John also sent me another photo that he took at Newhaven, this one zooming-in to the writing engraved on the wall above the cabinet.

 It reads:

"ERECTED 1775.    RE-ERECTED 1900"

I remember seeing this cabinet on the wall.  I first saw it in the 1960s.

-  Inside the cabinet, there was a barometer.

-  On the notice board to the right was a list of the times of high tide.

-  Engraved in the stonework on the pediment is a fishing boat with sail.

No 5 is to the left of Newhaven Free Church (now a climbing centre) at Nos.7-8 Pier Place, as we look at the buildings from Newhaven Harbour.

The tenement at No.5 Pier Place was built, around 1840,  as residential accommodation for The Society of Free Fishermen.
