The Photographer
Albert Watson
made his mark as one of the world’s most successful fashion and commercial
photographers during the last 35 years, while creating his own art along
the way.
His striking images have
appeared on more than 250 covers of Vogue and been featured in countless
other publications, from Rolling Stone to Time - many of the photos,
iconic portraits of celebrities, such as Jack Nicholson, Mick Jagger and
Johnny Depp.
Albert Watson was the Royal
Photographer for Prince Andrew’s wedding to Sarah Ferguson and is an
official photographer for His Majesty Mohammed VI of Morocco. Yet in his
native Scotland, Albert Watson is not well known.
'Frozen' will be his
first major exhibition in the city of his birth. The show will span 3
floors of the City Art Centre, and will feature Watson’s private
photographic artwork alongside his better-known commercial images.
Watson was born in Edinburgh (but see below)
and studied in Dundee and London before getting his big break with Max
Factor shortly after settling in the United States.

Penicuik
and
Edinburgh
It was actually
in Penicuik, about ten miles south of Edinburgh, that Albert Watson was
born, though he did attend school in Edinburgh.
He
described Penicuik, when he lived there, as a town populated by paper
makers and coal miners.

He studied at Glasgow and Dundee before moving to
Los Angeles in 1970 and working for magazines such as Rolling Stone,

The photos in Watson's exhibition range from 2.5m
x 6m portraits to his personal Polaroid collection.
