Begbie
appears to have been one of many photographers in the 19th century and
early 20th century who took portraits of subjects dressed as Newhaven
Fishwives, set against a studio backdrop.
I
prefer Hill
& Adamson's photos of the genuine fishwives, taken at Newhaven.
Newhaven
Heritage Museum in the old fishmarket building at Newhaven Harbour kept old fishwives' clothes that
could be used by children who wish to
dress-up and have their photos taken until 2006.
However, the museum closed for refurbishment in late 2006.
I don't yet know when it is due to re-open.
