Princes Street

The map below shows the studios in Princes Street  in the 1850s and 1860s.  Princes Street is the road with the tramway track that runs across the bottom of the map. 

Princes Street has an open outlook to the south, looking over Princes Street Gardens towards Edinburgh Castle.  The top floor rooms would have been bright and  suitable for photography, particularly with the prospect of trade from the passing tourists below.

This was the street chosen by several of Edinburgh's early photographers.
