Visit to St Andrews

In the early 1840s, possibly around 1842, a group of Edinburgh advocates and other gentlemen connected with Parliament House visited St Andrews to see the calotypes produced by Brewster and others.

On their return to Edinburgh, they created the Edinburgh Calotype Club. This is believed to have been the first photographic society in the world.

The Edinburgh Calotype Club produced several albums of their calotype photos.  Two of these albums are now held by Edinburgh Libraries.
