Leith Central
Railway Station

Thank you to Kenneth G Williamson, Silverknowes, Edinburgh who wrote:

Leith Central Station

Employment

"My grannie's cousin, Jimmy Gordon lived in South Leith station and worked in Leith Central station.  He, retired from the railways in 1965.

I have the certificate he was presented with.  Unfortunately, I never saw the gold watch he was also presented with as this was used to buy drink.

Having started on the North British Railway, Jimmy fought in the Great War then went back to work for the NB.

He was a soldier in the Gordon Highlanders and not only did he have tattooed on his chest their motto 'Bydand' (Standfast), but  he also had Gordon Highlander wallpaper and a huge stag's head above the mantelpiece.

He was involved in the General Strike and finally retired as Yard Foreman, Leith Central station.

He was also a great artist.  Some of his pictures used to hang in various pubs in the area as he often exchanged them for drink, unfortunately.
