Whaling from Leith
My gt gt gt grandfather,
George Sherar's family were Wine and Spirit Dealers in Leith.
They lived, we believe, in Water Lane.
He
left on the Betsy of Leith that was made by the firm of Aitcheson &
Co for Peter Petrie. It was supposed to be the first Scottish
Whaler to work out of Leith.
I got that from the
newspaper over here the Sydney Gazette, who in turn got it from the
Edinburgh Advertiser, so that would have to have been in 1832.
It
seems the Aitchisons & Co (spelt that way in article) were the first
to commence trade between Mauritius and Leith.
My
ancestor was Indentured to the firm of Aitcheson & Co from 1828 to
1832. Was it the same firm? One suspects but has no
proof.
He
may of been a part of outfitting the Dreadnought for a Hospital
Ship.
