The Route through Princes Street Gardens

A North British Railways train passes through Princes Street Gardens, beneath the steep face of Edinburgh Castle Rock.  The train is heading to the east and approaching Edinburgh Waverley station.

There were two tracks through the gardens until the opening of the Forth Rail Bridge in 1890 caused the traffic to increase.  Waverley station was extended.  The two tracks were replaced by four, shown in the photograph above in the 1890s.

The Photographer

Thank you to Harry Jack for emailing me with the following information:

"The photo of the NBR train in Princes St gardens (engine No 415) was taken by Dr. Tice F. Budden in 1898.  He was well-known as a photographer of railway subjects all over Britain from 1889."
