Photographers and Studios
Below are the professional photographers, named Ross. that
I have found listed in the trade directories.
Royal Warrant
It was James Ross and
Ross & Thomson who held the Royal Warrant.
Newspaper Advert
Thank you to Ron Cosens for passing me a copy of an
advert that he was given by Allan Collier.
The advert was published in the Caledonian Mercury on
Friday 23 June 1865. It reads:
MR
ROSS, PHOTOGRAPHER TO
THE QUEEN
has REMOVED
from
90 PRINCES STREET
To
BRAE HOUSE, LOTHIAN
ROAD |
So, it appears that:
- as well as having a studio at East Powderhall from
1859 to 1864 (see below) James Ross would have been
working from 90 Princes Street as part of the Ross &
Thomson partnership.
- The Ross & Thomson
partnership continued until after James Ross' move to the Lothian Road premises
in 1864. I cannot find any entry for Ross & Thomson
at Lothian Road in the trade directories, but I have an undated carte de visite
giving the address: Ross & Thomson, Lothian Road.
