Question

Studios

Several of the cartes de visite above have studio addresses in both Londonderry and Edinburgh.

However, Jim Low of Toronto Edinburgh has told me of one of his photos that has a different Londonderry address.  Jim writes:

"On the back of my photo it says:

Patronized by H. M. The Queen
Alexr Ayton
Photographer
Ship Quay Place
Londonderry
and
43 N. Bruntsfield Place
Edinburgh

"

Date?

Jim wonders if anybody else has a photograph with the same inscription, and if they can tell him when his photo might have been taken.  His estimate is '1870-81, possibly later.'

The only information that I can provide is that Alex Ayton was based at '43 North Bruntsfield Place', Edinburgh from 1881 to 1890.  His business remained at the same studio fro about another 50 years, but from 1891 onwards, the street was named 'Bruntsfield Place.

I don't have any information about the addresses and dates of the Ayton studios in Londonderry.

If you can help to answer Jim's question, please e-mail me and I will pass on your message to him.

Thank you.       -  Peter Stubbs:  May 24, 2007
