Cartes de Visite

Cartes de visite were a popular size of photograph in the second half of the 19th century.  They were photographs 3.5 ins x 2.25 ins, mounted on trade cards 4 ins  x 2.5 ins.

Almost all were studio portraits, but a few photographers including George Washington Wilson of Aberdeen and Archibald Burns of Edinburgh produced many carte de visite views.

Above is a carte de visite view by the partnership, Kyles & Moir, based in Portobello 1877-1882.  The view is of Portobello Pier.  The pier opened in 1871.

All the other cartes de visite that I have seen by Kyles & Moir are studio portraits:

Several Portobello photographers worked alone and in partnership, including Kyles and Moir.  Please click here to see further details of these partnerships.
