School Photograph

Reay, Caithness

Around 1898

Thank you to Katrina Kilpatrick from Glasgow, originally from Reay, Caithness, Scotland for sending me this photograph of a class at Reay School.

Katrina wrote wrote:

"John Gunn is the headmaster.  My relatives are, I believe, as follows:

-  Alexander MacKay 2nd row from back, extreme left.

-  William MacKay 2nd row from back, 2nd from right.

-  Jean  and Mary Mackay, 2nd row from front,
third from left and second from right.

-  Mary Mackay, 2nd row from front.

-  George MacKay back row extreme left.

This photograph was taken a few years before Jim Menzies' photo of the same school."

A Later Photograph

Here is Jim Menzies' photograph of the same school, with what appears to be the same school wall in the background.  Jim believes that this photo was taken between 1899 and 1906.

Cabinet Prints

The two photos above shows how D & W Prophet moved away from the Cabinet Print format of photograph to other ways of mounting and presenting their photos, around 1900.

The Cabinet Print was the normal format for the larger size of studio portrait  from the late 1860s until around 1900.
