Early 1900s
Thank you to Jim Menzies,
Windsor, Ontario, Canada for providing the photograph above of a school
class in Reay, Caithness in the north of Scotland, probably in the early
1900s.
There was just one name written on the frame of this photo:
- 'D Menzies' written beside the gentleman at the
top-right.

"I
know that the picture was taken between 1899 and 1906, as this is the
timeframe my grandfather was the teacher or schoolmaster at Reay school.
I have tried, unsuccessfully, to match other pictures I have of my uncles
with the school children shown. At least one of them would have been old
enough by 1899 to be in school and I do have information that they
attended this school. My own father was too young, so I know he is not
there. Sometimes I find it best to put something aside for a while, then
take a fresh look and see if I notice something new that clues me in." |
