William Weddell

Stationer

Seller of Photographs

William Weddell, stationers, (like the photographic dealers, Lennie) sold many photographs in Edinburgh in the 19th century.

These sellers added their stickers to the backs of the photos that they sold.  Weddell's sticker read:

Edinburgh Bible Warehouse

W Weddell

Bible Warehouses

I don't know whether or not there was any connection between Weddell's Edinburgh Bible Warehouse and the Edinburgh Bible Warehouse run by William Ritchie whose family went on to produces their 'Reliable Series' of picture postcards and books of Edinburgh views.

Photogrpahers

Photographs sold by W Weddell included:

-    Stereo views of Edinburgh by Archibald Burns

-  Carte de visite portraits of Edinburgh Ministers and other characters:

e.g. Rev Dr Wallace, by Messrs Low.

Rev William Pulsford, photographer not known.

John Russell, photographer not known.

Tokens

"I'm producing a catalogue of tokens made in Britain in the period 1820-1901.  Weddell was one of those issuers.

According to the census records, William had died some time before the 1881 census was taken, though Isabella was carrying on the business at the time of the census.

Photographer

"At the time of the 1851 census, William's 46-year-old brother, a photographer, was living with him  The census gives no detail as to whether or not his brother was working for William then."

"I saw Reply 1 above and thought you might like to know that William Waddell died in 1876.  I took a picture of his headstone.

We we are currently trying to identify the cemetery we took it in. We forgot to take a pic of the name of the cemetery.   It was near Edinburgh.

My son was working on his photography portfolio (headstones) when I took the photo."

Photo of Headstone

Barbara also sent me a copy of her photo.  Thank you, Barbara.  It showed a close-up of the headstone surrounded by some creeping plants,  maybe ivy, but I see nothing obvious in the photo to help identify the cemetery - other than to say that the plants appear to be taking over the gravestones as has happened in the southern part of Warriston Cemetery, Edinburgh.

The lettering on the headstone reads:

WILLIAM WEDDELL

BOOKSELLER

DIED 16 JAN 1876 AGED 63
