Question

Princes Street  -  Looking West  -  A crowd and trams on a wet day

Trams and crowds in Princes Street. When was this photograph taken and what was the occasion?

Reproduced with acknowledgement to John Stewart, Livingstone, West Lothian, Scotland

What was this Occasion?

1.

Visit of King and Queen around 1946?    The absence of flags is odd.

-  Dim-out skirts have been removed from street lamps.  This happened around 1945.

- Tram's lowest side panel is cream. These changed to maroon soon after 1946

-  Street lamp brackets are small.  These were replaced by larger ones about 1950.

-  Tram loading islands are small.  These were enlarged in 1951.

-  Frederick Street tram junction was lifted in 1952.

2.

Trams in that condition could be any time from 1930 to 1948, when the ivory panels were finally removed from trams.

Was there a Parade for the Edinburgh Festival?

3.

Was it an Orange Order Parade in 1948 or 1949?

4.

The Orange Order Parade was 1951.

5.

Was it a visit by the Royal Family?

6.

Was it the Parade of 1,000 Pipers?

7.

The Orange Order Parade was 1951.
