The Camera Obscura

The Camera Obscura building above is on the corner of Castle Hill and Ramsay Lane, at the top of the Edinburgh Royal Mile, just outside the Castle Esplanade.

There are views from the top balcony

-  north:   towards the New Town of Edinburgh and Firth of Forth

-  south:  towards Heriot's School and the Pentland Hills

-  west:    towards Edinburgh Castle and esplanade

-  east:     down the Royal Mile to St Giles Church and East Lothian.

The camera obscura still operates, giving views of the surroundings, projected onto a table.  The views can be impressive on a bright day with good cloud formations in the sky.

The building also houses permanent exhibitions of old photographs and holographs.
