Thank you to Ian Thomson, Lake Maquarie, New South Wales, Australia for allowing me to reproduce the photograph above.

"I found the picture of Jim Cairns' grandfather on North Bridge to be interesting.

Jim Cairns' Grandfather in North Bridge, early 1930s - possibly photographed by a street photographer

It made me pull out this old picture of my grandfather, John Miller, also taken on North Bridge.

My mother's writing on the back of the photo says 'Aged around 40 years'.  My grandfather died in 1934, aged 48, so that would put the picture around 1926."

"What intrigues me is that on back of the photo it says 'Jerome Ltd Post Card'.  Did Jerome take street scenes?"

Yes, Ian:  Most of Jerome's photos were studio portraits, produced as postcards.  But the company did also take some street scenes.  I have a few Jerome street scenes taken in Edinbrugh and elsewhere in my collection.

I've also seen a few Jerome photos of houses, some with people, presumably the occupants, standing at the door.  I don't know how many of the Jerome studios also took this sort of photos.  The photos that I've seen don't look very professional.  e.g. house leaning at an angle of 10 degrees!
