Demolition

Beaumont Place

Beaumont Place was part of the Dumbiedykes area of Edinburgh, close to the north-west corner of Holyrood Park.  Housing in the area was demolished around the early-1960s and replaced by new housing.

Two demolition workers and a cloud of dust can be seen on the left-hand side of the street.

This photograph  was reproduced in 'The Scotsman' on 23 November 1959.  George Smith, British Columbia, Canada, formerly Edinburgh, describes the location:

Beaumont Street

"The picture shows the opposite side of Beaumont Street from the 'Penny Tenement' collapse.

I guess the picture is that of a demolition as the whole street came down .

The brewery is in the background - possibly Mackays?"[

George Smith]

The large photograph above was one of several dozen taken in 1959 by Adam H Malcolm in the Dumbiedykes area of Edinburgh.  These photographs were taken shortly before the houses were demolished.  Adam H Malcolm donated these photographs to the Edinburgh City Libraries in the 1960s and they can now be found in the Library's Edinburgh Room Collection.
