Where is It? |
Late-1970s Photos Thank you to Mark Harris for allowing me to reproduce this photo. This is one of many black and white photos that Mark took in Edinburgh in the late-1970s. Question Does anybody recognise this street scene? - The main building is John Morris Licenced Betting Office. I can see the sign with the street name on the corner of this building, but I'm not able to read it. - There is also a Police Box with a siren on top in the lower-left corner of this photo. I've taken photos of all the police boxes in Edinburgh and I don't recognise this one, so it may have been removed since this photo was taken. ** Please email me if you recognise this location. Thank you. Peter Stubbs, Edinburgh: June 29, 2013 |
** Update Maybe I do recognise the police box now. See my comments at the end of Reply 4 below. Peter Stubbs, Edinburgh: June 30, 2013 |

Replies Received Late yesterday evening, I added 8 of Mark Harris' black and white photos of Edinburgh, all taken in the late-1970s, to the EdinPhoto web site. For the two photo above, I asked: "Where is it?" Thank you to everybody who has sent replies to me over the past 24 hours. There has been a remarkable agreement between almost all the messages sent to me. (All were sent independently, and I'm only adding them to the web site now, so people have not had the opportunity to read each others' replies before sending in their own messages to me.) |

Hi Mark. In fact, a lot of evidence seems to have built up that this photo was in fact taken near Goldbergs at High Riggs, Tollcross, Edinburgh. |

Goldberg's "Could the police box be just outside the bottom (south side) of Goldberg's car park? This would make the betting office near to where High Riggs met Lauriston Place at Tollcross. I parked many times in Goldberg's car park which was a sort of triangular shape and had this type of railings which you can also see on the photo below": Bryan Gourlay, Biggar, Lanarkshire, Scotland: June 30, 2013 |
Hi Bryan: Thanks for your comments. In fact there is still a police box at about the position you mention at High Riggs. Here are three photos of it that I took in 2008. The landscape surrounding the police box completely changed over the 30 years to 3008! Peter Stubbs, Edinburgh: June 30, 2013 |

Goldberg's "A wild guess, but it looks like the apex of Goldberg's car park. All I can say is that it's a one-way street! There is still a police box in that area but the area has been seriously redeveloped. It's frustrating that we can't read the street name. Maybe the owner of the original photo can read it." Hi Thomas: High Riggs, Tollcross Thanks for your comments. However, there seems to me to be strong evidence from 'Replies 1 to 10' above that this photo would have been taken at High Riggs, Tollcross - the site where Goldberg's store once stood. Peter Stubbs: July 2, 2013 |

Thank you to Terry Cox for confirming the location, as identified by many of the contributors in Recollections 1 to 10 (above). However, Terry wrote: |
High Riggs "In answer to your queries about the Licenced Betting Office and Goldbergs photos, these are actually both pictures of the same street, as you will notice that the poles and chains in the foreground are the same. It's the High Riggs. The betting shop is on the corner of Reigo Street. The sheds that you wanted to know about are the back of the SMT garage. The main entrance to the garage was in East Foluntainbridge, but there was a large entrance in Reigo Street, as well as these opposite Goldbergs. Incidentally, the last shop before the back entrance to the SMT garage was Knowles paper shop, where my mother got her papers, and where I often went for sweets when I was a lad. I'm sure lots of others will spot this as well." Terry Cox, Fairmilehead, Edinburgh: December 18, 2013 |
