Edinburgh Old Town?
"I was here in 1964
and am sure that this photo was was in the old town area not far
from the Salvation Army Building. (I
believe that was on the corner of Cowgate and The Pleasance - Pete
Stubbs.)
I've tried St Mary's Street and Blackfriars
Street, but don't think it's either of them. The only clues are the shop
name and a number (83) in the doorway between the shops. If you or
anyone can help I would be very grateful."

Where is it?
"I thought there would be
enough clues to me for this location to be identified fairly easily from
the listings in the Edinburgh & Leith Post Office Directories.
However, I've checked my
directories for 1950-51, 1961-62 and 1970-71 and not yet found the
location. Somewhere around the Cowgate seems likely to me.
The large doors on the right of the picture look familiar to me, but I
cannot recall where I might have seen them.
It will be interesting to
see how long it takes somebody to come up with an answer."

Our Visit to Edinburgh
"I was in a band known as 'The Incas'
from St Helens in Lancashire. We were playing at a folk club,
which I also can't remember the name of. I wonder if it is
still going.
It was June 1964 and we
were staying in one of the students flats."
Location of the Photo
"I know
that there was a Salvation Army place at the Pleasance and it would seem
reasonable to assume that the band wouldn't have come too far carrying
those musical instruments!
Maybe someone will remember those tall
possibly garage doors on the right of the picture too.

The foot of St Mary's Street
"I think this photo is the foot of St.
Mary's Street, opposite the Salvation Army Hostel.

Go to the
SCRAN web site and search
that site for reference, 000-000-127-322-R. There you'll find a photo of
81-85 St Mary's Street in which the writing above the shops matches that
in the photo above.
There's also a photo on the SCRAN web site
which shows the 'garage' with the large doors, further up the street.
These buildings have all, long since, been
demolished"

SCRAN web site
It's a while since I last
viewed SCRAN photos. When I looked for those that Terry mentions
above, I was not able to view anything larger than thumbnail size.
Terry was able to read the writing on the
buildings, so he must have found a way of viewing larger copies of the
SCRAN photos.
UPDATE -
SCRAN Photos
Terry wrote:
"I'm not doing anything
clever to see larger versions of the SCRAN pictures! I
always log on to SCRAN via the Edinburgh Public Library
site, using my library number to log on. This allows you to
see 2 larger versions of the thumbnails, which is very
useful for looking at close detail."

I agree with Terry. There seems to be no
doubt that this photo would have been taken at the foot of St
Mary's Street.
i.e. This photo would have been taken on the
corner of Cowgate and St Mary's Street. That's just across the
road from the Salvation Army building on the corner of Cowgate and
Pleasance.
EdinPhoto web site
I looked on the EdinPhoto web site for photos of buildings on the
corner of Cowgate and St Mary's Street, and found these two that may be
of interest.

This is the same building as appears in Photo 1. The large
'garage doors' can also be seen on the right-hand side of this picture.

Edinburgh Old Town?
"Wow! that was quick! The power of the
Internet at its best! I somehow always thought it was going to St Mary's
Street, the name seemed to be stuck somewhere in the dark recesses of my
memory. I'd only discounted it because another photo shows the
tobacconist on the opposite corner as number 85, which meant of course
that my photo showing number 83 is on the wrong side of the road. But
this photo disproves that theory!
©
We must have stayed above the tobacconist
shop because I have a picture taken from inside where you can see the
window from where I must have taken the photo and another window on the
side, which is presumably the one directly above the tobacconist shop
sign on the corner. From the angle of my photo I would say I was on the
first floor.

Please pass on my thanks to those who took
the time to find the answer for me. It now means that if I'm ever in
Edinburgh I can say, "That's were I stayed in 1964 when I was 19!".
