Thank you to Brian Strange Dumbarton, Dunbartonshire, Edinburgh for allowing me to reproduce drawings and text from his copy of 'Old Houses in Edinburgh',

This book was published by the Edinburgh historian, researcher and postcard publisher, William J Hay in 1905 and dedicated to The Right Honourable The Lord Provost, The Magistrates and Council of the City of Edinburgh.

Published in 18 Parts

It was published in 18 parts, each part sold at one shilling in its own folder and comprising three large pages (560mm wide folded down the middle x 385mm high) with a drawing by Bruce J Homes on one side of the page and commentary about the subject of the drawing on the other side of the page.

The drawings vary a little in size.  Most are about  A4 size, or a little larger if the small white border around them is included.

There are also pages of contents and background notes.  Here is the cover of one of the contents page, using the same style of text as is used throughout the book:

The copy of the book that Brian Strange owns is still in its original separate folders - i.e. not bound - and is almost, but not quite, complete.  I have reproduced.

I've selected 20 drawings from the book to add to the EdinPhoto web site.

I chose the drawings that I found to be most interesting or most appealing, and have now added to the web site:

small copies of the 20 drawings

large copies of the 20 drawings

descriptions giving background details for each of the 20 photos.

Donation

I'm pleased to say that Brian has now found a safe home for his 'Old Houses of Edinburgh' Book.  He visited Edinburgh Central Library last month (Aug 12, 2014) and offered it as a gift to the Library.

The staff at the library were enthusiastic and appreciative, and accepted his offer.

"These 20 drawings that you have shown are absolutely amazing.  The details of them are just stunning.

I've studied each one for a long time, and I am so glad to hear they are now in Central Library where they will be kept safe and appreciated so much by the people of Edinburgh."
