Gilmerton

South Suburban Line

Gilmerton lies about 4 miles to the SE of the centre of Edinburgh.  Gilmerton station was one of the stations on Edinburgh's South Suburban Line.  This line opened in 1884 but closed in 1962.  In recent years, there has been a campaign to re-open the line.

In this view, Gilmerton, with its coal mine, looks like a remote outpost.  Now, much of the land is covered in housing.
