Thank you to
Kenneth Williamson for sending me this photo of a No.12 tram in Leith Walk,
heading towards the foot of the Walk then along the coast to Joppa.
The railway bridge over the Walk was still in place when the photo was
taken.
I found the
transport, the bridge and the shops all to be of interest in this photo.
When might the photo have been taken? - possibly early-1950s?
Kenneth sent
the photo above to me after seeing a recent addition to the EdinPhoto web
site that included this one, showing where John Gibson, Cycle Makers and
Dealers were based from 1903 to 1914.

Gibson's
also designed and built aeroplanes for a few years (1910 to 1913). |

"This picture looks familiar to me as I used
to cycle around that area on my first bike.
The photo dates at around 1955 as it features
a Standard Vanguard Series 1 car that was built in 1953."

Leith Walk
1953-54
Trams stopped running in
Edinburgh in November 1956. However, I believe that Service 12 was
replaced by buses on 11 July 1954, so that would date this photo to
1953-54 ***
*** assuming I've correctly interpreted the
comment about trams on Service 12 being replaced by buses, on Page 81 of
DLG Hunter's boook 'Edinburgh's Transport: The Corporation Years'. |
