The School Library
Here, a group from the Upper 6th Form gathers around a 'story
reader' in the School Library, around 1962-3. Can anybody help
me to identify who is in this photo.
- Furthest from the camera in the middle of the picture is
Jim
Harrison from Birstall. Thank you to
John O'Donnell, Paris, France, for helping to identify the people
above: Nov 14, 2008. |

Thank you to Peter
Netherwood for telling me that the pupil sitting on the table in
this photo is Richard McDermot.

"I attended St Bede's from 1956-63, in
1A to 5 alpha, Lower 6, Upper 6. I can put names to
3 of the boys in this photo. They are:
-
Richard Hodgson
(myself), the story reader in this photo.
-
Gerard Ellis,
Skipton, behind me (head down)
-
Alexander ('Vince') Winiarski,
Bradford, behind me (full face).
The only boy that I can't name in this
photo is the one on the far right. I can't recall the
occasion, but it must surely have been specially posed for the
camera, as it is such an unlikely scenario. I am fairly sure
that it is earlier than the 6th form. I would say 5 alpha, ie
1960-61"

Posed Photos?

Yes Richard, as I recall,
everybody was already in the Library having a chat one lunchtime,
when I came in with my camera. They re-composed themselves
without any prompting on my part!

By contrast, not a lot of
posing went into this shot. It was just a brief stop on a
winter's walk for a chat and a smoke! - possibly somewhere along the
cross country course.

"My father, Philip Buckle, was a young
schoolteacher at St Bede's from 1961. He died last year, aged
84.
I was looking on the internet for an
article that my father wrote with Ron Elwood, another St Bede's
teacher, when I came across this photo taken in the school library:

When I first saw the photo, I was sure
that he story teller was my father, rather than one of the boys:
- the way he held his finger while
reading the book
- the mop of hair
- the glasses
- and, very much, the tweed.
However, I see that you have already
received a reply from somebody identifying themselves as the story
teller."

Do you remember the
teacher, Philip Buckle? If you'd like to send a message to
his daughter, Elizabeth,
please email me to let me know, then I'll pass on Elizabeth's
email address to you.
Thank you.

"Did Philip Buckle teach Latin and
Greek? If so, I remember him.
I attended St Bede's . I think
that the years that I attended were 1959 to 1964."
