This view looks across the narrow channel of the River Almond.
For many years there has been a ferry at this point taking passengers
on foot from the eastern shore of the River Almond at Cramond (about five
miles to the west of Edinburgh) to the western bank of the river from
which there was a walk of about five miles along the Firth of Forth, past
Dalmenny House, to the
Forth Bridges
at South
Queensferry.
The ferry closed during the foot and mouth outbreak, and has not yet
[at January 2004] reopened. I believe there may also be some concern
over the safety of the landing stages that has prevented the re-opening of
the ferry.
