The View
This view looks to the east from
Starbank Road, towards Marine Hotel at Newhaven. There are two roads
straight ahead:
- on the left: Pier Place,
running alongside the harbour (out of picture, on the left)
and past the church which has now been converted to an indoor
climbing centre). Pier Place by-passes the old village
of Newhaven by a few yards.
- on the right: Newhaven
Main Street, running through the centre of the old village.
This street is now closed to through traffic.
The building behind the tram is Newhaven
Fishmarket, now partly converted to restaurants. he old
fishmarket runs along the eastern side of Newhaven Harbour.

Thank you to Danny Callaghan who
replied:
"I
would guess by the smart dress of the kids and the style of
bikes this could be early-1950's.
This style of tram,
I am sure, was still running right
up till the trams finished."

The Hotel
Danny also asked the
name of the hotel on the Point in this photo.
The name was 'Marina
Hotel'. The hotel was at the western end of Pier
Place.

Thank you to Danny Callaghan who
replied:
"Allow
me to indulge my penny worth.
This
style of tram was phased out pre-war, circa 1938/39. I'm
open to correction, but I'd guess the date of this photo to be
early-1930s to mid-1930s."
