George IV Bridge  -  Construction Site

Location

This photograph was taken through the window of a bus passing in front of Edinburgh Central Library and heading towards the Royal Mile then the Mound.

The white van on the left is emerging into George IV Bridge from Victoria Street.

The Head Office of the Bank of Scotland in Bank Street, with its green dome, is straight ahead.

Demolition

This former Lothian Regional Council headquarters on the SW corner of George IV Bridge and the Lawnmarket (part of the Royal Mile) have been demolished, giving an open view towards Deacon Brodie's Tavern in the Royal Mile (centre-left):

Construction

This view will soon be lost again, as construction of a steel framework for the new building has already begun.  The framework is barely visible in this photo.

The new building will be named 'The Bridge'.  It will comprise a 130-bed hotel and a branch of the Bank of Scotland.

Road Signs

I find the road signs in this picture to be confusing.  The bottom sign normally warns that two-way traffic is crossing a one-way road, but George IV Bridge is not a one-way road.

However, the signs here do appear to be facing the correct way.  i.e. facing south.

Since I took this photo, the signs have become even more confusing, as they have been turned first to face east and SE, then to face west.

If you enlarge the third of the thumbnail images below you'll see two more road signs on the extreme right of the picture.  They are facing north, but should be facing south.
