'Old Reekie' This photo, taken in Autumn 1963, looks across from Edinburgh Castle, over the Grassmarket, towards Arthur's Seat, the 823 ft high hill in Holyrood Park. The summit of Arthur's Seat is only just over a mile away from Edinburgh Castle, but it looks much further away looking across the smoke rising from the homes in Old Edinburgh. The dome of the University of Edinburgh can be seen silhouetted against Salisbury Crags, to the left of the summit of Arthur's Seat. The low silhouette of Greyfriars' Church can be seen on the right of the photo, just over half way up the photo. |
