Lawnmarket

Location

The Lawnmarket is part of Edinburgh's Royal Mile, between St Giles Church and Tollbooth Church, now 'The Hub'.

The telephone box and police box in this photo are in the Lawnmarket.  They are close to the junction with George IV Bridge.  In the background are the hoardings erected for the demolition of the former Lothian Region Headquarters (built 1968, demolished 2007).

Police Boxes

Police Boxes, similar to the one above were once in use throughout Edinburgh:

- by the policemen making contact with their local police stations ( long before the days of mobile phones) and

-  by the public to make emergency telephone calls.

Now the Police Boxes are either lying unused, like this one, or have been converted to other uses, particularly as snack bars and coffee stalls:
