Lamp Posts
Thank
you to Steven Oliver for allowing me to reproduce this photograph taken
beside the Water of Leith at Sandport, Leith, in October 2010,
looking across the water to The Shore.
Steven
sent me this photo in response to a
question that I asked about street lighting in Leith. Stephen
replied, telling me that there are 23 lamp posts in Leith like the one in
the centre of this photo.
Another similar lamp post can be seen in this
photo. It is in front of George Brown & Sons' Engineering
Works, the white building in this photo on the east bank of the Water of
Leith at The Shore. |
Concrete Lamp Post
There is also a newer concrete lamp post on
the left of this photo.
Steven Oliver added:
"Note that the lantern on the concrete lamp post in the
background
of one of the photos is 'day-burning'. i.e. a form
of fail-safe mechanism for a lantern; if the timer or
photocell fails, then the lantern remains on, both day and
night until it is repaired.

From your photo,
taken a couple of months later, in December 2010, it looks
like that lantern hasn't been fixed yet"
