Haymarket Station

The Original Station

Haymarket Station was build as the original Edinburgh terminus of the Glasgow-Edinburgh railway, in 1842.  The line was later extended through tunnels and through Princes Street Gardens to reach Waverley station at the East End of Princes Street.

Threat to the Station

As part of the plans top introduce two tramlines into Edinburgh in 2009, the promoters suggested, in June 2003, that Haymarket station might be demolished and replaced by a station in a different position.  Following public concern over this idea, the suggestion was withdrawn in July 2003.

Photograph above

This photo shows the station on a quiet Saturday morning in July 2003 -  no football matches at Easter Road or rugby matches at Murrayfield today:  just a few taxis waiting to pick up passengers.

Photographic Studio  -  John Center

From 1875 to 1870, John Center, the Edinburgh professional photographer and bagpipe maker had a studio at Haymarket - originally not numbered, but in 1870 described as 5 Haymarket.

I believe the building was probably a few yards to the right of the view in the photograph above.  The building that housed his studio no longer exists.
