Portobello was a popular seaside resort in the early 1900s. Portobello lies on the Firth of Forth, and is about five miles to the east of central Edinburgh. Above are three photos from the early 1900s. The first was posted from Portobello in 1911. The second and third are taken from a very similar position. The beach is crowded in both. The chimney is smoking in the Thyne post card. |

Portobello Promenade |

The buildings on the left hand side of the top postcard are on Portobello Promenade. Several photographers had studios on Portobello Promenade during the early 20th century. The low building at the left hand side of this post card is 29 Promenade, a photographic studio from 1900 until 1922. The other photographers listed below at 20a to 26a Promenade had studios in the block behind. |
