Robert Butchart was City Librarian from 1942 until 1953.  In 1951 and 1955, he published books, cataloguing and commenting on the collection of prints and drawings held by the Edinburgh Room of Edinburgh Central Library.

He had a particular interest topographical prints of old Edinburgh, and following his death his sister donated 76 of engravings and old lithographs from his collection to Edinburgh Libraries.  They are now held in the Edinburgh Room at Edinburgh Central Library.

This small exhibition is in the display cases leading up from the ground floor of the library, and comprises a photograph of Robert Butchart and 26 engravings and old lithographs, all hand-coloured by Maxwell Gillespie.  Most of the prints are from:

-  Old Houses in Edinburgh  (Bruce J Howe, 1905-07) and
-  Picturesque Views of Edinburgh
(John W Ewbank, 1825)
.

Other prints from the Butchart Bequest were on display in the same display cases in early 2003.
