- George Smith Cundell - Joseph Cundell - Charles Edward Cundell - Henry Cundell |
The Cundrell family came from Leith. The family appears in several photos taken by John Muir Wood. There were four Cundell brothers: - George Smith Cundell (1798-1882) was a photographer scientist and politician. He was the author of a treatise on the calotype process. - Joseph Cundell (1802-?) was a photographer. - Charles Edward Cundell (1805-1880) was a painter. - Henry Cundell (1810-1886) was a landscape painter and photographer. |
Joseph remained in Leith. About 30 photos from the Cundell family, some attributed to Joseph, were found in a collection held by the early Edinburgh calotypist, John Muir Wood. John Muir Wood's collection, including the Cundell photos were donated to the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. |

The Cundell Family Question |
I have been asked by Edwin J Cundell, USA, if the Cundell family of photographers and painters above was related to Henry Cundell who emigrated to New Jersey, USA in the late 1800s and married a Mary Cotter who emigrated from Ireland to the USA. If you can answer this question, can you please email me? Thank you. |
