EPS Exhibition

Edinburgh Photographic Society held Annual Photographic Exhibitions in the 19th Century.  Two of these were on a particularly grand scale - in 1876 and 1890.

What else was there to do in Edinburgh in 1876?  Here are a few of the rival attractions, taken from advertisements in the local newspaper  -  the first three adverts on 5 December 1876, the fourth on 6 December 1876:

Admission 1s 0d.      Forenoon and evening  6d.

The Tay Bridge

LECTURE IN FREEMASON'S HALL  -  GEORGE STREET

Tomorrow:  A New Bridge across the Tay, illustrated by Photography.

This is the bridge that collapsed in a gale three later.

The Scottish Poet William McGonagall wrote a poem beginning:

"Beautiful Railway Bridge of the Silv'ry Tay!
 Alas! I am very sorry to say
 That ninety lives have been taken away
 On the last Sabbath day of 1879,
 Which will be remember'd for a very long time"
