Charles Piazzi Smyth

In his lecture to Edinburgh Photographic Society 0n 10 December 1869, Charles Piazzi Smyth, Astronomer Royal for Scotland, gave encouragement to the poor man travelling abroad with a camera.  He spoke of how resourceful and inventive such photographers could be.

He went on to describe his own work four years previously, using very small negatives and producing stereo views of the Pyramids in Egypt
