Edinburgh Castle

Here is another postcard by Reginald Phillimore  -  a view of Argyll Tower and its Portcullis Gate, first erected by David II.

Argyll Tower is now reached a short distance after entering the grounds of Edinburgh Castle.  The scene looks very similar today to the sketch above.

The postcard includes illustrations of Archibald Campbell and his son, also Archibald Campbell, both of whom were imprisoned in Argyll Tower before being executed in 1661 and 1685 respectively.

The reproduction of the postcard above appeared in the book 'The Work of Reginald P Phillimore in Old Picture Postcards' by Donald Lindgren  [ISBN 90 288 5264 6 / CIP].  Reproduced with acknowledgement to Rev. Donald Lindgren and European Library, Zaltbommel, Netherlands.
