Question

Where was this photo taken?

This photograph of an elephant was presumably taken at a zoo. Can you tell me if it was taken at Edinburgh Zoo, or London Zoo, or elsewhere?

The postcard has not been dated by Jerome, and has not been sent through the post.

This is one of very few outdoor portraits that I have seen by Jerome. Two others are of Leith Sands, Edinburgh, dated 1935.

"I believe the photo of the elephant was taken at Edinburgh zoo. I was born in 1952 and remember an elephant ride well. I was very young. I have a photo of the occasion.

I remember how hairy the elephant was with no proper saddle! I was wearing a dress at the time."

However, 8 1/2 years after receiving the message above, I received another message. It came from Ron Willis who collects postcards of Edinburgh Zoo, and who has produced an impressive list of all the Edinburgh Zoo postcards that he is aware of. (Thank you for forwarding a copy of your list to me, Ron.

Ron added:

"In your Jerome Portrait Postcards you have a picture of an Elephant giving rides. You are unsure of where the picture was taken'

I would be almost certain that it was taken at Whipsnade Park."
