Backdrop

"I think this photo would have been taken between 1934-49. I am really interested to know what the backdrop is supposed to be."

"My Aunt Patsy in Kansas City has just sent me this photo of my mother, aged about 6 or 7, that was taken in the Portobello studio of Robert McLelland.

My mother was born in 1928, so that would date the photo to about 1934 or 1935.

It shows another of McLelland's backdrops, and the most bizarre pony prop I've ever seen. My aunt tells me that my mother had earlier decided to give herself a haircut, and it certainly shows."

"I don't know who the family members are in Photos 1, 2, 3 and 4, but the toy car and the donkey are the same as those in the comments above."

Yes, the donkey in photo 1 below looks like the same donkey as above, but the toy car and donkey in photos 2 and 3 are different, though the toy car may date from the same period.

"I, too, have a photo from Robert McLelland's studio.  It is of my maternal grand mother with one of my uncles on a donkey that bears a striking resemblance with the donkey in photo 3."

The Stuffed Donkey

I agree:  that looks like the same donkey  -  and it doesn't appear to have moved between photos 3 and 5!
