Photos, Postcards and what else? |
Valentine & Sons are best known for their
postcards and photos.
However, they also produced several books.
What else did they produce? |
1.
Playing Cards |
St
Andrews University Library have a large archive of Valentine & Sons
postcards. The library sometimes receives questions about other items
produced by the company.
Staff
at the Library tell me that they have been told of playing cards that were
produced by the company, and that it was those overseas businesses
whose Valentine stock went beyond postcards that remained open when others
closed in the early 20th century. |

Plaquettes |
Thank you to Sally Lewis who e-mailed me in March 2006.

QUESTION
Can you help me identify an item I
found with some family books?
Just a brief description: It is a small
(almost 41/2 ins x 31/2 ins) religious picture with a little stand
(like a free standing picture).
On the back is printed:
VALENTINE'S
"PLAQUETTES"
SERIES M6/501/6
(could be M6/506/6 it is hard to see)
Printed in Great Britain
V & S Ltd D & L |
Hand written it is dated: July 23 1943
On the front it says:
"GOD IS OUR REFUGE AND STRENGTH,
A VERY PRESENT HELP IN TROUBLE"
psalm 46.1
I would be grateful for any suggestions. |
If you
can provide any further information, please
e-mail me and I will pass on your message to Sally Lewis. Thank
you. |

Comics |
Dr Chris Murray who researches and teaches comics at the University of
Dundee wrote:

Comics
"I've been trying to find out something
about two 'one-off' comics apparently produced by Valentine & Sons in 1948:
-
Ace Comics and
-
Super Bumper Comics
These were produced by comic
artist turned nature artist Len Fullerton, who had moved to Dundee a few
years earlier.
I wonder if you've ever come
across any references to these publications. Any help or advice about
how to find out more would be greatly appreciated."
Dr Chris Murray, School of Humanities, University of Dundee,
Dundee, Tayside, Scotland: September 8, 2015. |
Reply to
Dr Chris Murray?
Unfortunately, I was not aware that Valentine & Sons had ever published any
comics.
However, if you know anything about these comics, and would like to contact
Chris,
please tell me, then I'll pass on Chris' email address to you.
Thank
you.
