19th Century
Engravings
Photography
began in the mid-19th century, but for most of that century books were
illustrated by engravings.
Here are some old engravings of Leith that appeared in 19th
century books:
a) Modern Athens Published 1829
b) Old & New Edinburgh Published 1890
Both these books were lavishly illustrated with engravings.
The illustrations in these books were black and white, but now the books have
often been broken up and the individual engravings then hand-tinted and mounted
on board and sold for, perhaps, about £25 each.
