Princes Street

Thank you to Gordon Davie, Abbeyhill, Edinburgh for telling me about this Meccano Magazine cover from January 1955, featuring a Leyland Titan PD 2/12 bus passing the Scott Monument in Princes Street.

Buses to replace the Trams

This was one of a large batch of buses acquired by Edinburgh Corporation Transport Dept to replace the trams.  Trams last ran in Edinburgh in November 1956,

I thought it appropriate to add this picture to the web site today, the day after the new Edinburgh Tram Service started to operate, carrying passengers between York Place and Edinburgh Airport.

When I looked into the question of Meccano Magazine copyright (to see whether or not I would be able to add the pages above to the EdinPhoto web site, I was pleasantly surprised all the information that has been made available copyright-free on the Internet.

The Meccano Magazine was published from 1916 until 1981, monthly for most of this period.

Meccano Magazine Online

This Meccano Magazine Online Internet page shows thumbnail images of all the Meccano Magazine covers for this period.

-  Click on any of these images any you'll be taken to thumbnail images of the cover and all individual pages in that issue of the magazine.

-  That's how I found pages 2 and 3 of January 1955 edition, which included the article on Edinburgh buses acquired for tram replacement.  In fact, this article continues on page 6*.

* The text on page 6 is smaller and more technical, so I've not included it on the EdinPhoto web site.  However, if you wish to find this text and so read the whole article, please click on the 10th thumbnail image on row 2 of this Meccano Magazine, January 1955 page.

Buses in Princes Street

Jigsaw

"I have fond memories of the Leyland Titans as they were the buses which took me to school.  (All right, maybe the memories aren't 'that' fond!)

I was surprised when I first read the article and found the photograph of Princes Street at the top of page 3 of the magazine, as I have a jigsaw puzzle of that exact scene.

The jigsaw is a painting which I'd assumed was completely imaginary, but it's almost an exact copy of the photo - the only difference being that for some unknown reason the car overtaking the bus has been replaced by a different model.

The puzzle itself is relatively recent - it's one of those which has oddly-shaped pieces and straight edges in the middle - though of course the painting itself could be much older.

Tunnel at Scotland Street

"Over the years, the Meccano Magazine published several articles with an Edinburgh basis.

Your readers may be interested in one which appeared in the September 1957 issue (on page 440 continued on page 474) concerning the old Scotland Street railway tunnel."
