Edinburgh Waterfront

Waterfront Avenue

A New Road

Waterfront Avenue is a new road that runs north-east through the Waterfront from West Harbour Road (near the old lighthouse) through Saltire Square to West Granton Road (near the site where the new Telford College buildings are being constructed).

Saltire Square is a new square close to the centre of the Edinburgh Waterfront site.  The square, and Waterfront Avenue, were opened on 18 June 2004.

Photos 1 and 2

Photos 1 and 2 look to the west, up the gentle slope of Waterfront Avenue towards:

-   the new Scottish Gas building on the left.  It was constructed 2002, the first new building for the Waterfront site

-   the two remaining gasometers, one of which is to be demolished around August 2003.

In Photo 1, some remnants of the old industry can be seen on the left-hand side of the picture.

Please click here to see the junction of West Harbour Road and Waterfront Avenue under construction.

Photos 3 looks to the east, down the gentle slope of Waterfront Avenue, from a point close to the new gates of Caroline Park and the new Scottish Gas Office.

The scene is very quiet, apart from a few Scottish Gas workers, out for a lunchtime walk.

Saltire Square is on the left-hand side of Waterfront Avenue.  The new sculpture in the middle of Saltire Square is just visible between the first and second lamp posts on the left hand side of Waterfront Avenue

Saltire Square is on the left-hand side of Waterfront Avenue.  The new sculpture in the middle of Saltire Square is just visible between the first and second lamp posts on the left hand side of Waterfront Avenue.

I believe that the trams, expected to be introduced in 2009 are expected to run alongside Waterfront Avenue up one of the strips now covered in grass.

Old industrial buildings - presumably soon to be demolished - can be seen on the right-hand side of Waterfront Avenue.

The new housing being built in Leith Western Harbour can be seen straight ahead on the skyline.
