Newhaven Fishmarket

The Photograph

This photo was taken in January 2008, from in front of the bare trees in Fishmarket Square, Newhaven.  This view looks to the north across Newhaven Place to the former fishmarket beside Newhaven Harbour.

The southern end of the fishmarket is now Loch Fyne Restaurant.

Platinum Point, one of the new apartment blocks built in Leith Western Harbour as part of the Edinburgh Waterfront development  can be seen in the background.

The Fishmarket

Until the early 1990s, the whole of this building operated as Newhaven Fishmarket.  Now the north end of the building continues to operate as a fishmarket.

Harry Ramsden Restaurant

By the early 1990s, the building had fallen into a poor state of repair.  It was renovated and converted into three parts

-  North:  a smaller fishmarket.

-  Central:  Newhaven Heritage Museum (currently closed:  July 2008)

-  South:  Harry Ramsden Fish Restaurant

Loch Fyne Restaurant

Another refurbishment was carried out in 2007.  By then, the Harry Ramsden fish restaurant had closed.  It has now become a Loch Fyne shop and restaurant.  See the photograph above.  Another restaurant is now due to open within the building, beside the Loch Fyne restaurant.

Newhaven Heritage Museum

The area occupied by the Newhaven Heritage Museum (part of the Museums of Edinburgh) has been closed for refurbishment since late-2006.

UPDATE  -  July 2008

The Newhaven Heritage Museum is still closed.  I don't yet know when it is due to re-open.

UPDATE  -  May 2009

I have now  received this message from the City of Edinburgh Museums, telling me the outcome of a meeting of the City of Edinburgh Council's Culture & Leisure Committee held on May 6, 2009:

"I am sorry but Newhaven Heritage Museum will not now re-open. In brief, the reason for not re-opening is because the capital cost of doing so is currently beyond the Council's means.  ...

Instead, alternative ways of providing a museum service to the Newhaven community are to be explored.  Additionally, a Cross Party Working Group is to be established to examine the potential links in Museum activity across the Waterfront, including any potential for new provision and alternative funding sources."
