Thank you to Dorothy Addison, now living in Canada, for sending me the photograph above of the netball team from Towerbank School, Portobello, taken in 1948.

"This photo was taken by someone at the school  -  I'm not sure who.

I don't remember the girls' names. I only remember the headmaster, I don't know if that is a good sign or not.  His name was Mr. Allan."

Thank you to Bill Jansen, Portobello, who wrote

"My wife, Rena Taylor was in the netball team.  I think she was the captain, the one holding the ball in this photo."

Bill Jansen, Portobello:  June 20, 2007

Thank you to Dorothy Addison, Canada, who replied:

"Bill Jansen thought he recognized his wife in the Towerbank School netball team photo.

Yes, he is right. The girl holding the ball was Rena Taylor, the captain, and I was sitting to her left.  It was a great team."

John Langlands asked a question about R:

Question

School Song

"Can you please help us to find the words of Towerbank Primary School song from your correspondents?  The song was current while I was a pupil at the school, 1954-58.

So far all we have is:

Verse 2

School is the cradle and strength of a nation
Forth from its gates springs the youth of today
Filled with the power and the strength of creation
New worlds to fashion, old orders to sway

Chorus

Towerbank we praise thee our school by the sea
Raising our voices now triumphantly

Verse 2

Daah dah dah     daah dah dah    da aha dah daah dah
Theirs are the hands moulding destiny's clay
Daaah dah dah  daaah dah dah   daah dah dah   daah dah
Daah dah dah   daah dah dah   daaah dah dah  daa

John Langlands later provided the words for verse 2 of the Tower Bank school song:

Answer

Verse 2

Youth yields to manhood in rapid succession,
Theirs are the hands moulding destiny's clay
Theirs are the voices to end all oppression

Theirs are the hearts to keep evil at bay.

Update

"My daughter tells me that the whole school is now learning the song.  Are there plans to present it in public once the children are fully rehearsed?"

Portobello then Australia

"I attended Towerbank school in 1941 and then on to Portobello secondary school.  I became a bricklayer by trade and left for Australia in 1963.  I joined the RAAF in 1967 and served 20 years.  I am a Vietnam vet, now retired.

I'd love to make contact with any old school mates."

"I went to Towerbank School then on to Portobello High School and graduated around 1953 - I'm not sure exactly when, but I'd love to be in connect with others from the same time frame.

-  I had Mr. Wall at Towerbank and Miss Jeffries before that who scared me to death.

-   I remember the rides very close to school.

-   I walked my dog daily along the beach

-   I played on Joppa Rocks.

Netball Team

I'd love to be in contact with others who were probably class mates.  We seem to be scattered all over the world, but with the internet, that's no longer a problem!

One of my best friends at Towerbank was Willrene Marshall. Her father had a butcher shop on High Street, Portobello.

I wonder where she might be now.  I believe that she was in the States at one time.

I look forward to finding out more from others in the future."
