Thank you to Isa Paulin for
sending me Photo A above of children in Holyrood Square. If you recognise yourself in
this picture, please
e-mail me and I'll let Isa know.
Isa Paulin wrote:
"Here is a photo of some
kids from Holyrood Square who may just recognise themselves. I
reckon this was taken round about 1940 and was in Holyrood Park."

TOP ROW:
"My brother Albert is first
on left top row. He emigrated to Canada but has since died.
Next is Jackie Johnson who
used to be in my class at Milton House, then Alec Weddell, Eleanor
Paton and the lad on the end I remember as 'Malcolm'"
MIDDLE ROW
"I am on the left in middle
row and next to me is Margaret Weddell (sister of Alec)."
BOTTOM ROW
"I seem to remember that a
couple of the children on the bottom row belonged to the 'Bain'
family but I may be wrong."

"I
used to stay at 59 Holyrood Road, top flat, and used to pal about with Isa
Paulin's brother Albert, and Jackie Johnston. I also remember Isa
and all the kids that she mentions on the photo.
I was related to the Fairgreaves,
the Longmuirs, the Conways, Jock White and Dave Mcleod. I also went
to Milton house school.
I'm sorry to hear about Albert.
Like him, I emigrated to Canada in 1968. I am now in Victoria,
British Columbia age 73, and have been retired 14 years. I hope all is
well with you and yours, Isa. Thanks for the picture and the fond
memories"

Bus Trips
"I've just remembered a wee ditty
that we used to sing as kids:
'Am no gone tae Palmers trip
Am no gone again
Am no gone tae Palmers trip
It always comes on rain.'
Palmer was a church-going type of
guy. The kids all called him Uncle Palmer. He used to organise
bus trips to Spylaw park and Davidson's Mains, and it nearly always
rained, but it was good fun."

"Isa Paulin's photos
(1 above) triggered some memories. My
recollection is that our house, No 57 is on the top left of this photo:

Are the brick columns the outside
lavatories, each shared by two families?
Our family lived a No 57 from the
1920s until 1941, when we shifted to Pennywell."

Sister

my sister, taken in Holyrood Square, around 1936.

Playground
"The local children used Holyrood
Square as a playground.
The brewery draught horses were
hitched to wagons on Holyrood Road. Some of the boys dared each
other to duck and run under the horse's belly."
|
Spitfire Concerts
"For Spitfire Concerts, we used
the top of the air-raid shelter as a stage. A favourite song was
'Pennies from Heaven' with the people watching from their balconies,
throwing down coins at the appropriate section of the song - a collection
for the war effort."
|
School
"I remember walking up Bull's
Close to Milton House School and doing somersaults on the handrail that
ran up the middle of the lane."

"I
must admit that l was stunned when l saw this photo and names. I've
told my cousins about it. I've tried to contact Isa. It's a
pity that I've not heard from her.

Up to about five years of age, I
was brought up by:
-
my cousin Alex (the boy in the middle of the top row) and
- my cousin Margaret
(the girl on the right in the middle row).
We lived in a 'single end'
between White Horse Close and Holyrood
Square until 1949/50s when we moved to
Niddrie. I
now live in the Magdalene. I moved here after the council knocked
down Niddrie.
Alex is still alive, but Margaret died 10 years ago in Nova Scotia. Her husband is still
alive."
Grandfather
"My grandfather, John Weddell,
known to us as Daddy Weddell was married three times. He had large
families (1, 12, 3). He brought up two of these families in
Holyrood Square.
My father was in the middle
family, of which there is only one aunt still alive. She is the
youngest and is in her eighties."
Dances and Ladies'
Football
"My
grandfather used to run dances in
the Tolbooth on the Royal Mile. During the war all his family were
in the band.
He
also ran a girls' football team, reputed to be the first in Scotland, if
not the UK."

Hello again
Isa:
I mentioned, near the top

seen the photograph that you sent (above) and would like to contact you.
Others have now asked me
how they can get in touch with you. If you can
email me to let me know your current email address, I'll try to put
you in touch with the people who have asked for you. The latest two
are:
- Andrew Weddell, who
tells me that Dave Malcolm would also like to get in touch with you.

related to the Weddell family

"Yvonne Shaw
(mentioned at the end of
'Message 2 for Isa Paulin' above)
is my niece. I have been discussing family
history with her. I think she misunderstood
some of what I told her, so I thought I would clarify it here
She is the daughter of my
cousin, Helen Weddell. Her grandfather, Robert
Weddell, was my father's older brother.

fact Charles or Charlie, who died shortly before his father round about
1937."

There still seems to be a difference of opinion as to whether the
person 3rd from left in Photo B (Recollections 6 is:
- Charles (See 'Recollections 8') or
- Andrew (see below)

In 'Recollections 8' above, Paul
Weddell believes that Daddy Weddell's son, 3rd from left in this photo is
Charles.
However, my Auntie Nettie
believes it to be my father, Andrew, and I agree with her."
