This is a view looking
towards the centre of Edinburgh from Newington Station - a station on
Edinburgh's southern suburban railway line. The line is now closed
to passenger traffic.
The traffic in this picture suggests to me that it might have been
taken around the 1940s.
The buildings appear
very similar today [2003] , including the low
building with small turret behind at the extreme left of the photo, now
belonging to the Royal Blind School, Scottish Braille Press. The
tram lines and cobbles have gone, and the traffic looks a little different
today.
The long straight road,
vanishing into the distance in this view, is Mayfield Gardens leading to
the north into Minto Street, Newington Road, South Clerk Street then
Nicolson Street, past Edinburgh University into South Bridge

then
North Bridge which joins the East End of Princes Street.
