Houses and People

The photos on this page come from a collection held by the family of  Horatio Ross.

Can you help by identifying any of the people in the photos, or the locations, or the dates when the photos may have been taken or the photographer?   If you can, please email me.

Already identified:  Braelangwell House, Ross-shire (above).

Thank you.

Patrick Montgomery

New York, USA

Almost 5 years after I asked Question 1 above, I received this question about a photo attributed to Horatio Ross.

Can you help to answer the question?

Another House

"I recently came across your very detailed discussion on your web site about the photography of Horatio Ross.

Attached is a photograph that I purchased a few years ago. It was then attributed to Horatio Ross.

Photograph attributed to Horatio Ross - Which house might this be?

Reproduced with acknowledgement to Patrick Montgomery

Have you ever seen this photograph, or do you recognize the house in it? Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated."

Reply to Patrick?

I don't recognise the house in this photo, but it looks like  large house, probably somewhere in the Scottish Highlands.  It loos as if it might be quite recognisable to anybody who is familiar with it, so perhaps somebody might be able to tell us where it is.

If you think that you can to help Patrick to identify the house, please email me, then I'll give you his email address so that you can contact him.

Thank you to Winnie Lisowski who replied:

"I found a copy of this photo in Google Images.

Photograph attributed to Horatio Ross - Which house might this be?

It says 'Chateau ca.1860', but it doesn't say which house this is."

Which Web Site

I followed up the lead given by Winnie above.  I discovered that the photo on Google images was taken from The History of Photography web site on Flickr, where it is described as:

'Horatio Ross - Country House, ca.1860'

This Flickr page includes a brief note about the life of Horatio Ross, but makes no mention of the location of the house, so I assume that the location is not known to the person who added the photo to this page.
